This is how I picture my mom most of the time. She just finished off some ice cream and is giving me that "mom" look after telling a joke. This is "Dad the Scholar". This is one of the ways I picture him. Amy and I were flying back to San Antonio and I snapped this picture in the Nashville Airport. To me it's a simple expression of how so many of us feel after traveling for the holidays.
I've been working on this idea for a self portrait using the TV. I don't think this is quite it but it's close. This is my first attempt at light writing. It's a lot of fun by rather difficult to get right when drawing shapes. I took the easy way out and traced a light around Amy. I used a lensbaby with this so I'm interested in how my 50 prime would change things. You might think I'm lazy for taking this picture and you would probably be right but as I took these pictures (oh yeah I took several) I thought a lot about what Manwich has meant to me over the years. I can't help but think about Church Camp or childhood in general. Sloppy Joes are a staple of any man's diet. I firmly believe Jesus would have eaten this if he had the opportunity.
Self-portraits are tough for me. I think that it's a good exercise. It's easy to be self-conscious about one's own picture. It's also an excuse to try back lighting with strobes. This gets hard when you don't get the light just right. I didn't get it right. One of the hot techniques in the photography/photoshop world is adding textures to pictures. I'm not sure if I'm a fan of it but it has its place. You'll see it in a lot of wedding photos. Here's a go at it with a picture of my house.
I like simple images. At first it's merely a bowl of soup but upon further reflection it becomes more to me. To me it's a reminder of good food. It's a reminder of Thailand because I will never take for granted eating beef again. It's a reminder that I have food to eat. It's a challenge to consider the source of my food, the embedded energy and cost. It's a reminder, a challenge, a memorial, a bowl of soup. Lazy picture. I was at work till almost 9pm. So here I am playing some Halo 3 online to blow off some steam. I am also working on controlling the image more in camera raw in Photoshop. I love playing with lights. This was taken while driving to our favorite Mexican spot for queso.
I dig the 50mm lens and I really like the available resolution in the 5D Mark II. You can crop way in and still retain a lot of nice detail. I picked up a new point and shoot camera. I was playing with the macro view in this one. I'm hoping the CHDK crowd comes out with a hack soon to expand it's capabilities. I love this picture. Some kids from the neighborhood. They were quite willing to strike their favorite pose. I'm mad I didn't think to work my shadow out but I needed to keep this crop from cutting off the kids leg.

You might notice the darkened edges. Many people add this vignetted look artificially in Photoshop. This aberration is due to a phenomenon called barrel distortion. Shooting at f/4 105mm will cause this if your glass isn't perfect. Thankfully the look is in and the bad design works in my favor.

Description: I'm attempting a 365 project. This is an effort to shoot more. There are no hard rules. So I'm going to try and post a least a shot a day but maybe more. We'll see how long I can keep it up. If you want to request photos please do so in the comments. Thanks. Taking several pictures a day in raw format can begin to take up some serious space. I plan on updating the totals periodically of storage space required. Current storage needed: 25GB
Location: All Over
