Learned something new today.

My son is rocking his new Nirvana shirt!

When my son recently had to help preach a few Sundays ago, we spent time preparing for his portion of the delivery.

Our youth minister mentioned offhand that the movie is heavily influenced by Hamlet by Shakespeare. I didn't know that, and my son was equally unfamiliar. I've honestly not read a great deal of Shakespeare. I've done a little, but only largely through schoolwork over 25 years ago. So I took the opportunity to educate myself and my son. Something I've been doing lately is getting graphic novel versions of classic works. My son eats them up, and they do a great job of largely remaining faithful to the originals but making them more accessible.

The movie Inside Out gave everyone a vocabulary for feelings that was clearly missing. I hear more people talk about core memories now, and it's seemingly become the standard descriptor for big moments in a kid's life. I catch myself using it, and it seems completely normal now.

I've noticed my son treating Claude more human-like. He will tell it good night or goodbye. He also will share challenges at school. It's been relatively tame, and he has a fairly strong sense of how it is a computer program.

Another math problem falls.

Millennials will be the first generation of adults that forwent having children and will struggle as they take care of aging parents and, more importantly, themselves as they continue to age. We have not yet come to terms with how impactful that will be, but I can only imagine a loneliness epidemic unlike anything we’ve seen before will emerge.

Nursing homes filled with old people with no loved ones to check on them. Grim.

Social institutions will emerge and revitalize to help address the issue, but it won’t be enough.

The secret to getting what you want is to have no ego about getting credit for it. If people think something is their idea and you're willing to let them have that "win," then you can get very far.

My wife’s electric toothbrush apparently sounded like Pantera while brushing this evening. Amazing.

People should settle more. Paul Skallas is on to something here and it’s something my wife and I talk about a lot. Marriages have thrived for thousands of years that were not bonded by temporary Eros feelings. When I hear people talk about being single and having trouble finding their person, I just assume they’re evaluating the wrong signals around compatibility and long-term companionship. It’s great to feel lovey-dovey for your spouse but I also feel lots of other things too. All of them carry me through.

I think I’m getting an Impulse Stove when we remodel this fall. This thing is amazing-looking.
